Music of the White House Series
Updated Schedule

A series of evening concerts that highlight the variety of music played at the White House and musicians who have performed there in the past 150 years. Programs in the Hall of Musical Instruments, NMAH, feature the 1903 Steinway "Golden Grand" that was in the White House for 35 years. These programs are being held in conjunction with two National Museum of American History exhibitions: Piano 300: Celebrating Three Centuries of People and Pianos (International Gallery, Ripley Center, through October 21, 2001) and The American Presidency: A Glorious Burden (3rd floor, NMAH, permanent).

The Smithsonian Chamber Music Society, Lambert Orkis, piano, Lisa-Beth Lambert, violin, and Kenneth Slowik, cello, all of whom have performed at the White House. Mendelsohn's "Trio in D minor, op. 49," performed at the Kennedy White House in November 1961 by Pablo Casals will be performed on this program. Author Elise Kirk gives the pre-concert talk. "Off the Record"—Presidential Popular Songs by Irving Berlin, George M. Cohan, Stephen Sondheim, and others, with Broadway musical theater performers (to be announced).
